It’s DF Retro’s BIGGEST episode yet – split into three parts running in consecutive weeks. John Linneman and Audi Sorlie revisit the launch of the Sony PlayStation from its origins in Japan to its eventual rollout across the globe – and in the process, assess every single launch title in all three territories, stacking them up against other versions on other systems. It’s coverage without compromise. This is DF Retro.

  1. Oh man. The PS1 boot up noise still gives me goose bumps. Such fond memories

  2. guys this is a great video but it‘s barely watchable. ads every 60 seconds or so

  3. The Playstation start up screen and music still gives me chills to this day.

  4. "Do you know what's not worth playing though?"
YouTube cuts to a WealthSimple ad
    I AGREE!

  5. There's an extremely interesting unofficial PlayStation history documentary from Rebellion. From bedrooms to billions the PlayStation Revolution. It's featuring almost every major name from Sony Kojima, Cerny, jaffe, and more. Highly recommend if you're a PlayStation fan

  6. Sonic R OST in Ridge Racer is impossible

  7. It would be pretty cool if Sony make PlayStation 9.5 inch cellphone that would have 120 built in games, PlayStation Vita style buttons, D Pad, start and select, and Touch pad with it's new and original joysticks, share button and 4 shoulder buttons R1, L1, R2, and L2.

  8. Just got off watching this on my home to this young PlayStation 5😍

  9. PS1 AND 2… everything else is trash… company is trash get over it

  10. I remember getting the black car (The Wraith) in RR1. Damn near impossible. Also, R&T NFS1 came to the PS1 and was so much better than 3DO's version. 3DO's best game was Dragons Lair IMO. Then there was TEKKEN, forget Virtual Fighter. MGS1… RE1, RE2 and RE3, FFV, VI and VII…ect.

  11. It's Ridge Racer,
    R I D G E R A C E R !
    Remember that one?

  12. One of your best videos. My PS1 launch experience was battle arena toshinden, ff7 demo disc, Tobal n1, and Twisted Metal! What a time.

  13. Best content on the channel, which is saying a lot. Great job John and Audi.

  14. Is there a chance for 1st xbox debut video??

  15. Good as usual just to remember Latin America as well. Here i was about 23 years old and PS1 was a king! We have Nitendo/NES/MEGA DRIVER etc but PS1 take usually was the First Choice of 8/10 players. Regards from Brazil

  16. So Ironic how the PS1 even has philip chips inside, many people dont know Philips and Sony CO-invented CDs

  17. you shouldnt forget the SATURN was MASTER on rendering 2D sprites. The PS was not really designed for it, this is why a lot of these 2d sprites games look worst than in Saturn.

  18. This entire video works because of that CRT background display. Beautiful compositions! My Life in Gaming would be proud!

  19. Riiidge racer did you remember that one?

I miss the Japanese staff of playstation…

  20. I remember when I first had my PS1. I was living in my newly renovated apartment with my sis and mom. I was only about 13 and oh man it was the time of my life. I also had my SNES and Yoshis island was out around the time too.. I had friends come to visit then. I miss those days 😢

  21. Talking about Mahjong games, could you make a video about that Mahjong game on the Super Famicom that included in its cartridge the most expensive "support chip" ever made for that console? It made the game retail for more than 13000 yens or something like that.

  22. Lol all those ads. Luckily I'm watching using vanced so you won't get a penny out of me

  23. Stopped watching when you said ridge Racer had good drifting

  24. Love these retro themed semi-documentary videos. Looking forward for part 2! I hope you will make the same thing for the Saturn at some point 🙂

  25. Oh wow, I always thought core designs Fighting Force was the next step for streets of rage 4 but no i was wrong. Nekeketsu Oyako was the next evolution for streets of rage 4. cool video. i'll be tuning in tomorrow for part 2.

  26. Neo Geo AES started the use of memory card almost 4 years earlier than the PlayStation.

  27. Great video. would like to see one about saturn too. What do you think?

  28. I remember as a kid going to Blockbuster and renting the Playstation a few times before my parents got me one. I remember not having a memory card and playing Resident Evil I finally made it all the way to the Tyrent one time and died, it was the first time I screamed at my TV.

  29. Does anyone have a list of the music they used in this video? Didn't DF used to have a list of the tracks in the description in older videos?
