This is Centuri’s cool but largely forgotten “Vanguard” arcade game that we had in the showroom. This video shows some gameplay, the cabinet’s design, and the artwork package that was on this gem. See all our other games that we have available at the moment at … subscribe for weekly videos!

Joes Classic Video Games is owned and operated by Joe Lyons, our arcade division is known as Lyons Arcade, and our website is at … stop by to see it sometime!

Our showroom and video game store is located at 139 Caldwell St, in beautiful Downtown Rock Hill, SC 29730. We have a huge 100 year old building full of arcade games for sale, classic games, pinball machines, and all kinds of coin operated and home video game accessories for your mancave or game room. We get items from the old penny arcade days all the way through the vintage arcade machines of the 70’s, the best arcade games from the 90’s, and on up to the modern day classics from the 90’s !

Typically the best arcade games sell quickly, so although some of the videos you see here on our website may be of top titles they may have sold almost immediately after the video was finished. We get these old gmaes in typically in pretty rough shape, repair them, then film a video after we’re done and upload it here fo rour friends on Youtube. People often wonder if we get free arcade games, not usually, we pay a decent prive even for ones that are broken or need repair. Typically we get 1 or 2 pinball machines in a month, and many more arcade games each month.

If you enjoy videos like this, PLEASE subscribe to us above by clicking the button! It will notify you every time we put up a new video, which is usually once or twice a week.

You can also stop by our website at to see what we have in currently. Who knows, maybe we have something you’re interested in!

Thank you for watching!

  1. Vanguard ripped of the theme music from the movie flash Gordon vultans theme

  2. The grand daddy of Salamander/Lifeforce, ground breaking! multiple scroll directions and temporary instant power up option. Loved playing this at the arcade, sadly no remotely similar home computer ports on my C64 beyond Firefighter Mario for the C64.

  3. This was my favorite game when I was 10. Wish I could find one nearby…

  4. My vanguard marquee isn't clear and unable to be backlit light that… odd.

  5. This game fascinated me so much back in 1981 when I discovered it in an arcade in Florida.  I loved the Flash Gordon music and the speech.  In fact, talking games like Vanguard, Gorf, and Wizard of Wor, as well as my discovery of the Radio Shack TRS-80 Voice Synthesizer, paved the way for one of the things I'm doing now, an application that reads email and web pages over the phone with computerized speech.

  6. I so want that JOUST..
but I am broke so a guy can dream.

  7. VANGARD was OK reminded me of scramble and
choplifter? I think that's the name of the game.

  8. Hay Joe… What are doing with that… Ah sorry got stuck on JIMI HENDRIX for a second.
Have you ever came across the arcade machine TIME TRAVELER from Sega the holographic laser disc arcade game?
Because I really want to see how it works and what it looks like on the inside of the cabinet.

  9. They had this at my local pizzeria. Man i was a baby lol. Loved it big time. Great game especially for it's time. Music like Flash Gordon 👍

Not sure why i took so long but…Subbed

  10. the next to final zone in a level has the snakes in it and they give you points if you let them get you

  11. also snk made this game and centuri had the license for the American version

  12. Oh man, this game is such a timewarp for me. I actually just bought this game for my PS3 from the PSN store for only $2.99 a couple days ago. It's so cool to find this video with an actual 'Vanguard' arcade cab. I also used to have this game on the old Atari 5200. I have really cool memories of me and my friends riding our bikes far into the downtown area back in the day (early to mid 80's), going to one of the many classic, elegant department stores there and hidden by the Northeast exit of the store was a small area with about 3 or 4 arcade machines against the wall. 'Vanguard' was one of them.

I remember taking turns with my friends to try and get the highest score possible and hopefully entering our initials in the much regarded "1st Place" score tier. I also remember playing 'Phoenix' and 'Galaxian' at the old downtown Greyhound bus station. Man, I miss those days – summer vacations from school, hanging out with my friends, chasing neighborhood girls we liked, watching/listening to music on the radio and on MTV, riding our bikes all over the place, pooling our money to play video games, buying 'Star Wars' and 'Wacky Packages' trading cards and finally getting sodas for the long bike ride home.

That and so much more, all while not having a care in the world, except for wondering what cool TV shows/movies were airing later that night, what mom had made for dinner (me hoping she would make it an ultra rare Pizza Hut night), what cool early morning cartoons were worth waking and getting up for (especially on Saturday's) and overall, what new adventure(s) awaited us the following day. Those summer days seemed endless. I'm really grateful that I had those experiences as a kid. The strong nostalgic element I just got from watching this is off the charts. Thanks for having made this video and for making my day…

  13. Thanks, was standing next to a cabinet that wasn’t on and wondered what this game was.

  14. I noticed that you had Vs. Super Mario Bros in your Joust cabinet here. How come?

  15. I picked up a Vanguard cabinet last week. At some point they re-gamed it as Time Pilot. The TP stickers where placed over the Vanguard ones. Even the marquee was placed on the backside of the original. When I bought it the guy said it didn’t work but for $20 I couldn’t pass it up. The cabinet is roached bad, the joystick and buttons leaf switches where mangled. But after 15mins having it home I had it powered up and working and another 30 I had the controls swapped out with some happ ones I bought with plans for a retropi build. But now after about 3 hours of play the monitor has a red tint. So I’m guessing it needs a cap kit. This is my first machine and I’m planing on building a new cabinet useing the old as a pattern. And sticking with the wood grain look. I really like the Centuri cabinets, they scream 80’s lol

  16. My mum used to take me to play this game when I about 9 years old.

    Miss you mum

  17. Not sure they licensed the Star Trek TMP music either ;p

  18. Oh the memories! I loved Vanguard and Phoenix was good fun too.
By the way, have you ever taken a REALLY GOOD look at the monitor bezel for Scramble? There’s a pretty.. ahem… risqué picture of an alien woman performing a certain sexual act in the artwork.

  19. There are snakes in the game. Snake Zone”
